The Wild Thornberrys

On September 1, 1998, The Wild Thornberrys premiered on Nickelodeon. This Nicktoon was about a family of wildlife documentary filmmakers who travel the world in an RV, and their youngest daughter Eliza, who can talk to animals.

Nerdy Fact: The show had an all-star cast, including Tim Curry as Nigel, Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers as Donnie, and Lacey Chabert as Eliza.

Yer a Wizard, Harry

Also on September 1, 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone released in the U.S. This book by J.K. Rowling tells the story of a young boy who discovers that he is a wizard and goes to a school of magic, where he makes friends, enemies, and faces a dark lord who wants to steal a powerful artifact. This launched one of the largest fantasy franchises in history.

Nerdy Fact: The name Voldemort is derived from the French words ‘vol de mort’, which means ‘flight of death’ or ‘theft of death’.
