THE SPACE RACE
In 1957, Sputnik was launched. Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth, launched by the Soviet Union, which sparked the space race between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.
Nerdy Fact: Sputnik was only 23 inches in diameter but weighed about 184 pounds. It carried a radio transmitter that emitted a beep-beep-beep signal that could be heard by anyone with a radio receiver on Earth.
In 1995, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island released in the US. This is a classic platform game where you control Yoshi, a friendly dinosaur, who must carry Baby Mario across various levels and rescue his brother Luigi from the evil Kamek and Bowser. The game features a unique hand-drawn art style, innovative gameplay mechanics, and a variety of enemies and puzzles.
Nerdy Fact: The game introduced a new health system where Baby Mario floats away in a bubble when Yoshi gets hit, and Yoshi has to catch him before a timer runs out. This idea of a refillable health bar was later adopted by many first-person shooters, such as Halo.
“WELL, NO ONE’S LAUGHING NOW.”
In 2019, Joker premiered. This movie depicts the origin story of Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who suffers from a disorder that causes him to laugh uncontrollably, and how he transforms into the iconic Batman villain after being rejected and abused by society.
Nerdy Fact: Phoenix based his Joker laugh on videos of people suffering from pathological laughter, a condition that causes uncontrollable and involuntary laughing or crying. He said that the laugh was the hardest part of playing the character, as he wanted to make it sound authentic and painful.
