A NEW BOY WONDER

In 1989, Tim Drake first appeared as Robin in Batman #442. Tim had deduced the identities of Batman and the previous Robins by observing their exploits and recognizing Dick’s acrobatic skills.

Nerdy Fact: Tim Drake was the first Robin to have his own solo comic series, which ran for over 100 issues from 1993 to 2009. He also became the leader of the Teen Titans, a team of young superheroes that included Superboy, Wonder Girl, Impulse, and others.

THE ANSWER IS YES

In 1990, Are You Afraid of the Dark? premiered. This Nickelodeon series features a group of young storytellers who call themselves the Midnight Society and share scary stories around a campfire.

Nerdy Fact: The famous line “Submitted for the approval of The Midnight Society” was a homage to The Twilight Zone, which used the phrase “Submitted for your approval” in its introductions.

RAIDIN’ TOMBS

In 1996, Tomb Raider released on the Sega Saturn. This action-adventure video game follows the exploits of archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft as she searches for the ancient artefact called the Scion of Atlantis across various locations, such as Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis.

Nerdy Fact: Lara’s character model was made of only 540 polygons, which gave her a very angular and pixelated appearance. Her iconic braid was not added until the second game, as the first game’s graphics could not handle it.

CARL!

In 2010, The Walking Dead premiered. This popular horror drama series follows a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies and other threats. The show is based on the comic book series of the same name.

Nerdy Fact: The zombies are actually eating ham with barbecue sauce on it, not flesh. The show’s makeup artist, Greg Nicotero, said that they tried different types of meat, but ham was the most convincing.
