LIVE FROM NEW YORK

In 1975, Saturday Night Live premiered. This late-night live television sketch comedy, political satire, and variety show airs on NBC and features celebrity guests and musical performers.

Nerdy Fact: Chevy Chase was the first person to deliver the show’s iconic intro line: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”. He was also originally hired as a writer, not a performer.

PAPER MARIO

In 1996, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door released in the US. This game combines the charm of paper cutouts with the adventure of a role-playing game. Mario and his friends must explore a mysterious world and collect seven Crystal Stars to stop an ancient evil from awakening. Along the way, they will encounter colorful characters, witty dialogue, and exciting battles.

Nerdy Fact: The game has some hidden Easter eggs, such as the graffiti in Rogueport that says “GameCube”, which can be seen when the camera rotates as you go past the gallows and through the narrow hallway to behind Zess T.’s house.

30 ROCK

In 2006, 30 Rock premiered. This hilarious sitcom parodies the behind-the-scenes of a fictional sketch comedy show on NBC (such as Saturday Night Live), starring Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, and other talented actors.

Nerdy Fact: Donald Glover, who later became famous for his roles in Community and Atlanta, was one of the writers for 30 Rock in its early seasons. He was also the only black writer on the staff at the time, and he was so young that he was still living in a dorm at New York University when he started working on the show.

GOOG-TUBE

In 2006, Google announced the purchase of YouTube, the leading online video platform, for $1.65 billion in stock, marking a milestone in the evolution of the internet.

Nerdy Fact: YouTube was running out of money, server space, and facing legal threats from record labels before Google acquired it. The company had to rent servers from different providers and move them around to avoid being shut down.
