“THOSE AREN’T PILLOWS!”

In 1987, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles released in theaters. This classic comedy movie stars Steve Martin and John Candy as two mismatched travelers who try to get home for Thanksgiving, who face various obstacles and challenges on their journey, and learn to appreciate each other’s differences and similarities.

Nerdy Fact: The movie was originally four and a half hours long, and had to be cut down to 93 minutes. Hughes had a 145-page script and shot a lot of footage, but he also deleted some scenes that he felt were too emotional or dramatic for a comedy.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

In 1992, Aladdin released in theaters. This animated musical fantasy comedy movie, based on the Arabic folktale “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” from the One Thousand and One Nights, tells the story of a poor street urchin who finds a magic lamp with a genie who can grant him three wishes, and his quest to win the heart of Princess Jasmine while avoiding the evil schemes of the Grand Vizier Jafar.

Nerdy Fact: Robin Williams improvised most of his lines as the Genie. The comedian and actor was given a lot of freedom to ad-lib and improvise his dialogue, resulting in over 16 hours of recorded material. Some of his impressions and references were so obscure that the animators had to look them up.
