Today in Nerd History | May 15

Buckle up, gamers and film enthusiasts! On May 15, we’re flying high with Mickey Mouse, running and jumping through the Mushroom Kingdom, and speeding into the post-apocalyptic wastelands of “Mad Max.” Today, we celebrate the historic debut of Mickey Mouse in “Plane Crazy,” the return of Mario in “New Super Mario Bros.,” and the pedal-to-the-metal action of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Let’s explore some “Nerdy Facts” about these iconic entries in pop culture.

Inclusion on this list does not imply that the entry is family friendly, only that is was a nerd culture milestone. Parents should, of course, use discernment.
1928: Mickey Mouse in “Plane Crazy” (Theaters)

Mickey Mouse made his first-ever appearance in the silent short film “Plane Crazy,” which premiered as a test screening on May 15, 1928. Although not picked up by distributors initially, it set the stage for Mickey’s future as an animated superstar.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Aviation Inspiration: Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created “Plane Crazy” as a comedic take on Charles Lindbergh’s first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, which had taken place just a year earlier in 1927.
  • Silent Mouse: The short was initially released as a silent film, but after Mickey’s breakthrough success in “Steamboat Willie,” sound was added to “Plane Crazy” for its official release in 1929.
  • Iconic Partners: “Plane Crazy” also marked the debut of Minnie Mouse, who joins Mickey on his chaotic aviation adventure, kicking off a decades-long partnership both on and off the screen.
2006: New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo DS)

“New Super Mario Bros.” brought Mario back to his side-scrolling roots on the Nintendo DS, introducing new gameplay mechanics and revitalizing the classic platforming genre for a new generation.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Reviving a Classic: It was the first original side-scrolling Mario game in over a decade, since “Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins,” bringing back the simple joy of running, jumping, and stomping Goombas.
  • New Power-Ups: The game introduced new power-ups like the Mega Mushroom, which turns Mario into a giant capable of smashing through obstacles, and the Mini Mushroom, which shrinks him to a fraction of his size.
  • Sales Juggernaut: “New Super Mario Bros.” became one of the best-selling Nintendo DS games of all time, with over 30 million copies sold, cementing its place as a must-have for the handheld console.
2015: Mad Max: Fury Road (Theaters)

“Mad Max: Fury Road” roared into theaters, bringing George Miller’s post-apocalyptic vision back to life with a high-octane blend of action, stunts, and incredible visuals.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Action and Practical Effects: The film used practical effects and stunts wherever possible, featuring spectacular real-world car chases and explosions that wowed audiences worldwide.
  • Furiosa Takes Center Stage: Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Imperator Furiosa not only stole the show but also redefined the modern action heroine, earning her character a devoted fan following.
  • Oscar Success: “Mad Max: Fury Road” dominated the 2016 Academy Awards, winning six Oscars, including Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design, proving that blockbuster action films can be both commercially successful and critically acclaimed.

May 15 is a day to celebrate the timeless joy of iconic characters, groundbreaking games, and cinematic excellence. From Mickey Mouse’s earliest flights to Mario’s platforming adventures and the explosive chaos of “Fury Road,” these stories have brought joy and excitement to generations of fans. Happy Nerd History Day to all who continue to soar, stomp, and speed through their favorite worlds!
