HORTON HEARS A WHO! | 2008

In 2008, Horton Hears a Who! premiered in theaters. Horton Hears a Who! is an animated movie based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name, about an elephant who tries to protect a microscopic world on a speck of dust from his skeptical neighbors.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The gibberish that the Mayor speaks before slamming his arm into the wall is the same gibberish that Steve Carell used when he played Evan Baxter in Bruce Almighty.

  • The first portrait that the Mayor shows to JoJo is a Who-style caricature of Dr. Seuss himself.

  • After the snow falls in Whoville, the children can be seen building a Grinch snowman.

VIKINGS | 2013

In 2013, Vikings premiered on History Channel. Vikings is a historical drama television series that depicts the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok and his descendants in the 8th and 9th centuries CE.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The name Ragnar Lothbrok means “keeper of the fort” and “hairy trousers” in Old Norse.
  • The Vikings used a kind of eyeliner called kohl to protect their eyes from the sun and to enhance their appearance.
  • The former WWE wrestler Edge, whose real name is Adam Copeland, played a Viking named Kjetill Flatnose in season five.
LOGAN | 2017

In 2017, Logan premiered in theaters. Logan is a superhero film starring Hugh Jackman as an aging Wolverine who must protect a young mutant named Laura from a powerful corporation.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • Logan is the first and only X-Men film to be nominated for an Academy Award, in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.

  • Hugh Jackman agreed to take a pay cut to ensure that the film would receive an R-rating, as he believed it was essential for the character’s final outing.

  • The film is loosely based on the comic book storyline “Old Man Logan”, which depicts a dystopian future where the villains have taken over the world and Logan has retired from being Wolverine.

NINTENDO SWITCH | 2017

Also in 2017, the Nintendo Switch launched in the US. The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console that can be used as a home console or a portable device, and features detachable controllers called Joy-Cons.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The Switch was originally codenamed the Nintendo NX.

  • The Switch is Nintendo’s first console that is not region locked, meaning you can play games from any country on it.

  • The Switch has sold over 100 million units, making it the third best-selling console of all time, behind the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS.

BREATH OF THE WILD | 2017

And also in 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched on the Nintendo Switch and the Wii U. Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game that lets the player explore a vast open world as Link, who must save Princess Zelda and stop Calamity Ganon from destroying Hyrule.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The game features voice acting for the first time in the series, but Link remains a silent protagonist.

  • The game has a hidden tribute to the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who passed away in 2015. Satori Mountain is named after him, and it is one of the most beautiful locations in the game.

  • The game has a speedrun category called Bread%, where the goal is to bake bread as fast as possible. The current world record is 16 minutes and 27 seconds.
