TOMAR-RE | 1961

In 1961, Tomar-Re made his first comic book appearance in Green Lantern (Vol. 2) #6. Tomar-Re is a Xudarian from the planet Xudar in Sector 2813 and was a scientist before joining the Corps. As a Green Lantern, Tomar-Re was responsible for protecting his sector and became a mentor to new members, including Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Earth. He is also recognized for his attempt to save the planet Krypton from destruction.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • Tomar-Re was the first Lantern to meet Hal Jordan’s predecessor, Abin Sur, and later became a mentor to Hal Jordan himself.

  • Tomar-Re’s most famous mission involved the planet Krypton. He tried to use stellarium to absorb tectonic pressure and prevent Krypton’s destruction, but a yellow solar flare blinded him, causing him to drop the compound.

  • Tomar-Re was voiced by Geoffrey Rush in the 2011 Green Lantern film.

LIAR LIAR | 1997

In 1997, Liar Liar was released in theaters. Liar Liar is a comedy starring Jim Carrey as a lawyer who, due to his son’s birthday wish, cannot tell a lie for 24 hours, challenging his career and personal life.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The gag where Fletcher chases his son as “The Claw” was something Carrey’s father did to him and his siblings.

  • No sound effects were used when Fletcher beats himself up in the restroom; those are the real sounds of Carrey’s head slamming into the urinal, floor, and walls.

TWITTER | 2006

In 2006, Twitter was founded. Twitter, now known as X, is a major social media platform where users can post messages, images, and videos, and it’s recognized as the fifth-most visited website globally.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The hashtag was first introduced in 2007, becoming a fundamental part of social media communication.

  • An average of 350,000 tweets are posted every minute, which amounts to over half a billion tweets per day.

  • One of the original name ideas for Twitter was “FriendStalker,” which was ultimately not chosen.
