From iconic movies to groundbreaking games and significant literary contributions, this article takes a trip down memory lane to explore the notable nerd culture events that occurred on March 20th in history. Let’s celebrate these cherished moments that have left an indelible mark on the hearts of fans around the world.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS | 1986

In 1986, The Darks Knight Returns #1 released in comic shops. The Dark Knight Returns is a groundbreaking Batman story where an aging Bruce Wayne comes out of retirement to confront his inner demons and a dystopian Gotham, culminating in a climactic battle with Superman.

Nerdy Facts:

  • This story is set outside the regular Batman continuity, which allowed Miller to explore themes and events that wouldn’t necessarily fit within the ongoing narrative of the Batman comics.

  • Its release in 1986 had a profound impact on the comic book industry, reshaping the perception of superhero stories as serious literature and influencing countless writers and artists.

  • The story is known for its iconic imagery, such as the importance of Martha Wayne’s pearl necklace, which has become a prominent element in later retellings of Batman’s origin.

TIGER KING | 2020

In 2020, Tiger King premiered on Netflix. Tiger King is a true crime documentary series that delves into the chaotic world of big cat breeding in America, spotlighting the eccentric life of former zookeeper Joe Exotic and his feud with animal rights activist Carole Baskin. Had this been released any other time in history, and it never would have made this list, but given it’s release during the pandemic’s content drought, Tiger King became a lifeline for many of us, nerds or not.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Filming began in 2014, and it was initially meant to investigate a Florida-based snake dealer.

  • Joe Exotic’s zoo, renamed to the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, faced financial struggles after the change in ownership.

ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS | 2020

In 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons released on the Nintendo Switch. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a charming social simulation game where players create and personalize their own island paradise. This was also a lifeline during the pandemic.

Nerdy Facts:

  • It had been 7 years since the last mainline Animal Crossing game before New Horizons was released.

  • Blathers was able to assess multiple fossils at a time, a new feature that streamlines the museum donations.

  • Players can complete daily challenges to earn ‘Nook Miles’, which can be spent on themed clothing and items.
