FIRST TELEPHONE CALL | 1876

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell placed the first telephone call. Bell called his assistant Thomas Watson and said, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

Nerdy Facts:

  • Bell and Watson could hear each other through a liquid transmitter, which used a mixture of acid and water.

  • The term “ahoy” was originally used as a greeting for telephone calls. Bell’s rival, Thomas Edison, later suggested using “hello” instead.

  • The first transcontinental telephone call was made on January 25, 1915, between Bell in New York and his former assistant Watson in San Francisco. The call lasted for 23 minutes and was witnessed by President Woodrow Wilson and other dignitaries.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER | 1997

In 1997, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on The WB. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a TV series created by Joss Whedon that follows the adventures of a teenage girl who is destined to fight vampires and other supernatural forces.

Nerdy Facts:

  • The show was originally a movie, but it was very different from the TV series. The movie was more of a comedy, while the TV series was darker and more serious.

  • The character of Buffy was partly inspired by Joss Whedon’s own struggles with anxiety and depression. He wanted to create a strong female hero who could face both literal and metaphorical monsters.

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar almost didn’t audition for the role of Buffy, but her agent convinced her to try. She became one of the most iconic and praised actors on the show.
