YOSHI’S STORY | 1998

In 1998, Yoshi’s Story launched on the Nintendo 64. Yoshi’s Story is a platform game in which the player controls different-colored Yoshis who try to restore happiness to their island by eating fruit and defeating enemies.

Nerdy Facts:

  • The music of Yoshi’s Story was composed by Kazumi Totaka, who also voices Yoshi in this game, a first for the Super Mario franchise.

  • Yoshi’s Story was the first Super Mario / Yoshi game on the Nintendo 64 released in North America to be rated E for “Everyone” due to the changeover by the ESRB from the previously used K-A “Kids to Adults” rating in 1998.

  • The original Yoshi seen in Super Mario World was more dino looking than the later versions of the character. Yoshi’s Island debuted the new look, with larger hands and arms and an overall more rounded, cuddly appearance.

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH | 2015

In 2015, The Last Man On Earth premiered on Fox. The Last Man On Earth is a comedy series about the last man on Earth after a virus killed most of the human race. It follows Phil Miller’s adventures finding other survivors and the group learning how to live in this new normal.

Nerdy Facts:

  • The show is based on the novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, which was also adapted into three movies: The Last Man on Earth (1964) with Vincent Price, The Omega Man (1971) with Charlton Heston, and I Am Legend (2007) with Will Smith. However, this take on the idea is a much more humorous one.

  • The show features many celebrity guest stars, such as Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Jon Hamm, and Will Ferrell.

  • The show ended with a cliffhanger in 2018, after being canceled by Fox. The fans have been campaigning for a revival or a movie to wrap up the story.
