Today in Nerd History | July 21

Daily On YouTube Shorts

July 21 is a historic pop culture supernova—marking humanity’s first steps on the Moon, the magical finale of a wizarding era, and the cinematic explosion (quite literally) of one of the biggest box office showdowns in history. From real-world space suits to fantasy cloaks and fashionable pink heels, this day proves that awe, wonder, and creativity come in many forms.

Inclusion on this list does not imply that the entry is family friendly, only that it was a nerd culture milestone. Parents should, of course, use discernment.
1969: Neil Armstrong Becomes First Man to Walk on the Moon

On July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong made history as the first human to set foot on the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission, uttering the iconic words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Nerdy Facts:

  • Historic Broadcast: An estimated 600 million people around the world watched the moon landing live on television, making it one of the most-watched events in history.
  • Lunar Legacy: Armstrong’s footprint, along with those of Buzz Aldrin, will remain on the moon’s surface for millions of years due to the lack of wind and erosion on the lunar landscape.
  • Moon Souvenirs: The Apollo 11 astronauts brought back 47.5 pounds (21.5 kilograms) of lunar material, including rocks and soil, for scientific study.

Isn’t this on the wrong date? Depends on what time zone you choose. Typically, in America, most history pages would say that this occurred in the late evening of July 20th. We have chosen to use the Universal Time (UTC), given that this event happened on the moon, not in America. That would put this as happening at 2:56 a.m. UT on July 21, 1969.

2007: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book)

The seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” was released, concluding the epic saga of the boy who lived.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Record-Breaker: The book sold 8.3 million copies in the United States within the first 24 hours of its release, making it the fastest-selling book in history at the time.
  • Simultaneous Release: For the first time in the series, the book was released simultaneously in multiple languages and countries, allowing fans worldwide to experience the conclusion together.
  • Spoiler-Free: Despite high anticipation and massive pre-orders, bookstores implemented strict security measures to prevent leaks and spoilers before the official release.
2017: Fortnite (PlayStation 4/Xbox One)

Epic Games launched “Fortnite,” a battle royale game that quickly became a global sensation, attracting millions of players with its engaging gameplay and ever-evolving content.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Massive Player Base: By the end of 2017, “Fortnite” had amassed over 45 million players worldwide, making it one of the most popular games in the world.
  • Cultural Phenomenon: The game’s influence extended beyond gaming, with its dances, emotes, and events becoming part of popular culture, even making appearances in sports celebrations and concerts.
  • In-Game Events: “Fortnite” is known for its unique live events, such as in-game concerts featuring artists like Travis Scott and Marshmello, which draw millions of viewers and players.
2023: Barbie (Theaters)

The highly anticipated “Barbie” film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, premiered, bringing the iconic doll to life in a fresh, modern, and imaginative way.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Diverse Cast: The film features a star-studded and diverse cast, including Ryan Gosling as Ken, showcasing a variety of Barbies and Kens in a vibrant and inclusive Barbie world.
  • Behind the Scenes: Greta Gerwig, known for her work on “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” brings her unique storytelling style to the Barbie universe, promising a blend of humor, heart, and social commentary.
  • Cultural Impact: The movie has sparked renewed interest in Barbie, celebrating the doll’s history while reimagining her for a new generation.
2023: Oppenheimer (Theaters)

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” debuted, offering a gripping biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

Nerdy Facts:

  • Historical Epic: The film delves into the complex life of Oppenheimer, portraying the moral and ethical dilemmas he faced during the Manhattan Project.
  • Star Power: The movie boasts a stellar cast, including Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, with performances from Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon.
  • Nolan’s Craft: Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Nolan employed practical effects to recreate nuclear tests, emphasizing realism and authenticity in the storytelling.

Happy Nerd History Day to all who revel in these incredible milestones!
