MONEY IN THE BANK | 2006
In 2006, WWE held the New Year’s Revolution Pay-Per-View, which featured a 6-man Elimination Chamber Match won by John Cena. Upon winning the match, Edge became the first man to cash in the “Money in the Bank” briefcase, which guarantees the holder a championship match anytime they choose to cash it in. Edge took advantage of John Cena having been in a brutal match just moments before to take his shot. He became the new WWE Champion.
To win the MITB ladder match, a participant must climb a ladder and retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract for a world championship match that can be cashed in at any time within one year.
Initially, the MITB ladder match was a part of WrestleMania, which featured both Raw and SmackDown superstars. However, in 2010, it became its own pay-per-view, allowing for separate ladder matches for both Raw and SmackDown.
In 2017, WWE introduced the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match, won by Carmella. This marked a significant step in WWE’s women’s division.
