ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE | 1994

In 1994, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective released in theaters. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a comedy film starring Jim Carrey as a quirky animal detective who is hired to find the missing dolphin mascot of the Miami Dolphins football team.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • Jim Carrey came up with some of the movie’s catchphrases, such as “Allllrighty then!” and “Loo-hoo-ser”, hoping they would become popular. Which they indeed did.

  • The movie was a huge box office success, grossing over $107 million worldwide.

  • The movie spawned a sequel and an animated series, the later of which once crossed over with the animated series for The Mask, based on another movie that starred Jim Carrey.

FACEBOOK | 2004

In 2004, Facebook was launched from Mark Zuckerburg’s dorm room in Cambridge, Mass. Originally named “Thefacebook”, Zuckerburg and his Harvard classmates launched the website as a way to connect college students online.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The first face of Facebook was Al Pacino, an American actor. The website featured a header image with a man’s face obscured by binary code.

  • Facebook is the third most popular site in the world, after Google and YouTube.

  • Facebook users have uploaded 250 billion photos, which means 350 million photos are uploaded to Facebook every single day.

  • Facebook is primarily blue because Mark Zuckerberg suffers from red-green color blindness.

APEX LEGENDS | 2019

In 2019, Apex Legends released on PC and consoles. Apex Legends is a free-to-play hero shooter game where contenders from across the Frontier team up to battle for glory, fame, and fortune in various modes and environments.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • Apex Legends is set in the same universe as the Titanfall series, taking place 30 years after the events of Titanfall 2.

  • Apex Legends was released without any prior marketing or announcement, surprising both fans and critics alike.

  • Apex Legends has a team-based gameplay, where players form squads of three and communicate with each other using a ping system. The game also has a respawn mechanic, where players can revive their fallen teammates at certain locations.

REACHER | 2022

In 2022, Reacher premiered on Amazon Prime. Reacher is a series based on the best-selling Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child, starring Alan Ritchson as the titular ex-military hero who gets involved in various mysteries and conspiracies.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • Alan Ritchson, who plays Jack Reacher, is 6 feet 4 inches tall, which matches the height of the character in the books.

  • The first season of Reacher was based on Killing Floor, the first novel in the series, while the second season was based on Bad Luck and Trouble, the eleventh novel. The series has been renewed for a third season, which will be based on One Shot, the ninth novel and the source material for the 2012 film Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise.

  • The series is the most-watched show on Prime Video in 2023, with over 2 billion streams in the first three days of the second season.
