THE PHANTOM DEBUTS | 1936

In 1936, The Phantom, a fictional costumed crime-fighter generally considered the first superhero, made his debut as an American newspaper comic strip, created by Lee Falk.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The Phantom is known as the “Ghost Who Walks” because he lives in a hidden Skull Cave in the fictional African country of Bangalla, and is believed to be immortal by his enemies.

  • The Phantom wears a purple costume and a mask that covers his eyes, which are said to burn with fire when he is angry. The costume was originally grey in the comics, but was changed to purple by a colorist who thought it looked better.

  • The Phantom is also the first superhero to have a legacy, meaning that he is not one person, but a succession of fathers and sons who inherit the title and the costume. The current Phantom is the 21st in the line.

BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE | 1989

In 1989, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure premiered in theaters. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a comedy film about two high school slackers who travel through time to collect historical figures for their history presentation.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The film was originally titled Bill & Ted’s Time Van and featured a different time-traveling device than the phone booth.
  • Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter auditioned for the opposite roles of Ted and Bill, but the writers decided to switch them after seeing their tapes.
  • The film was shot in just six weeks, with a budget of $10 million. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $40 million worldwide and spawning a sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, in 1991. A third film, Bill & Ted Face the Music, was released in 2020, after nearly 30 years of development.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA | 2023

In 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premiered in theaters. Quantumania is a Marvel film that follows the adventures of Scott Lang, Hope Van Dyne, and their family as they explore the Quantum Realm and face the threat of Kang the Conqueror.

 

Nerdy Facts:

  • The film started the new era of the MCU, as the first movie of Phase Five.

  • Cassie Lang, Scott’s daughter, was recast for the third time, with Kathryn Newton taking over the role.

  • Kang the Conqueror, the main villain, was inspired by historical figures like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, and Iago from Othello.
