AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

In 2012, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiered in theaters. An Unexpected Journey is a fantasy film (the first of a trilogy) based on the novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, in which a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins joins a company of dwarves and a wizard to reclaim their homeland from a dragon.

Nerdy Fact: Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo Baggins, was the first and only choice for the role, but he initially had to decline due to scheduling conflicts with his TV show Sherlock. However, Peter Jackson was so determined to cast him that he rearranged the entire shooting schedule to accommodate Freeman’s availability.

In 2017, the Walt Disney Company announced the acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox. This was a historic deal that gave Disney access to a vast library of content and franchises, as well as a controlling stake in Hulu and a significant presence in international markets.

Nerdy Fact: The deal was the largest media merger in history, surpassing the AOL-Time Warner merger of 2000. The deal gave Disney the rights to many popular franchises, such as X-Men, Avatar, The Simpsons, Planet of the Apes, Alien, Predator, Die Hard, Home Alone, Ice Age, and more.

INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

In 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse released in theaters. Into the Spider-Verse is an animated film that follows Miles Morales, a teenager who becomes the new Spider-Man and teams up with other Spider-People from different dimensions to stop Kingpin’s plan to destroy the multiverse.

Nerdy Fact: The film was announced by mistake in 2014, when a hacker group leaked confidential data from Sony, including details about the project.
