Today we celebrate a criminal mastermind with a flair for puzzles and panache. August 23, 1948, marked the debut of one of Batman’s most iconic foes—a villain as obsessed with questions as the Dark Knight is with answers.

Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, The Riddler made his debut in “Detective Comics Vol. 1 #140” on August 23, 1948. Edward Nigma, better known as The Riddler, is a criminal mastermind who leaves clues and puzzles for Batman to solve, often leading to elaborate and dangerous schemes.
