Today in Nerd History | April 10

Hey there, fellow nerds! Buckle up because today we’re diving deep into the gritty streets of Hell’s Kitchen with a hero who truly brought the dark and brooding to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

2015: Daredevil (Netflix)

On this day, we celebrate the arrival of “Daredevil” on Netflix in 2015, a series that not only redefined superhero storytelling on the small screen but also set a new standard for character development, action sequences, and moral complexity. So, let’s put on our best red suits (or horned masks, if you prefer) and explore some “Nerdy Facts” about the show that gave us one of the best live-action portrayals of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.

Nerdy Facts:

  • A Visionary Approach to Blindness: Charlie Cox, who played Matt Murdock/Daredevil, trained with a blind consultant to accurately portray blindness on screen. Cox’s commitment to the role included learning how to read Braille and using a white cane, ensuring his portrayal respected the real experiences of visually impaired people.
  • The Hallway Fight Scene: One of the most talked-about moments from the first season is the single-take hallway fight scene in episode 2. This meticulously choreographed sequence, which lasts for nearly three minutes without a cut, showcases Daredevil’s fighting skills and resilience, and has been hailed as one of the greatest fight scenes in TV history.
  • From Page to Screen: The showrunners and writers drew heavily from Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.’s “Daredevil: The Man Without Fear” comic book miniseries, among others. This influence is evident in the series’ tone, character development, and visual style, making it a hit with both long-time Daredevil fans and newcomers to the character’s saga.

“Daredevil” not only kicked off a new era for Marvel on Netflix, leading to several other series and an eventual team-up in “The Defenders,” but it also left a lasting impact on how superhero stories could be told with depth, darkness, and a dash of moral ambiguity. April 10 remains a milestone for fans of Matt Murdock’s alter ego, reminding us of the thrilling, heart-wrenching, and sometimes bone-crunching journey we took through the back alleys of Hell’s Kitchen. Happy Nerd History Day to all who continue to seek justice, whether by the gavel or the fist!
