Love Thy Nerd was provided an early screener of this film for the purposes of writing this review.

A few months ago, a TikTok account started getting a lot of attention. The channel was run by an elementary school art teacher named Matt Taylor. He would film himself painting landscapes and sharing uplifting words of wisdom. While heartwarming, the thing that really made the account stand out was the fact that Matt Taylor both looked and sounded exactly like comedian and comedy actor Kevin James.

Despite the accusations, Kevin James claimed to have no idea what people were talking about. Matt Taylor accepted the compliment but insisted it was a coincidence.

Of course, nobody really bought it, but TikTok did one of those rare, lovely things and played along. It was a lot of fun.

But the question remained. Who is Matt Taylor?

Imagine my joy when I heard the name again in a completely different medium. The new film distributed by Angel Studios, Solo Mio, directed by the Kinnane Brothers.

This film has been promoted as essentially a “chick flick for guys.” It really is the perfect description. It is a romantic comedy, but told almost entirely from the male perspective.

Solo Mio follows Matt Taylor after he is left at the altar and decides to turn his non-refundable honeymoon in Italy into a solo vacation. While there, he meets Gia, played by Nicole Grimaudo, who begins to help heal his heart with the help of a few new friends who are also on the same honeymoon package.

The movie is a beautiful story about heartbreak and healing. It balances the mourning and denial that come with being abandoned alongside the confusing emotions of meeting someone new who might be the person you were meant to be with, showing how sometimes heartbreak is just the first chapter of a better story.

In addition to James and Grimaudo, the cast also includes Jonathan Roumie (The Chosen), Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy), Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother) and Julee Cerda (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers).

Let me just say this. I am a sucker for a good rom-com. My wife got me into them when we were teenagers. She still teases me for tearing up just a little at the climax of Never Been Kissed when it looks like Drew Barrymore might be left standing alone.

It was just allergies, I swear.

Solo Mio works for many reasons, but one of the biggest is that it is fun and funny without being raunchy or juvenile. That is something that plagues a lot of modern rom-coms and, in my opinion, strips away the emotional weight those films are trying to carry.

This is not Kevin James from Paul Blart: Mall Cop. That is a modern classic in its own right, but not exactly romantic leading man territory. This is Kevin James showing a side of himself we do not see often, and he plays it with a sincerity that genuinely lands.

I do not want to spoil anything, so I will leave the story there. If you are a fan of love stories, be ready to have your heart warmed.

While the film is clean in tone, it is worth noting that Solo Mio is not a Christian film. Angel is the distributor, not the creator. The project was selected by the Angel Guild, the community of members and investors who support the platform, as a film that promotes light over darkness.

And it does exactly that. The story highlights love, community, friendship, and selflessness without pretending humanity is perfect or that relationships are easy. It does include some drinking, a bit of drunkenness, and a few mildly spicy words.

In the end, Solo Mio instantly lands in my top ten rom-coms. Maybe even my top three. It is a fantastic date night movie, and with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I would absolutely recommend grabbing tickets.
