RPG Rundown 40 | The First Impression: The Role of Artwork and Design

SHOW NOTES

What makes a TTRPG book unforgettable before the first session even starts? Seth & Jeff dive into the power of artwork and design, and how everything from cover art to typography can shape the way we learn, play, and experience tabletop games.

On this episode of The RPG Rundown, hosts Seth & Jeff explore how artwork and design do far more than make a game look good. From first impressions and worldbuilding to layout, readability, typography, maps, and production quality, they break down how visual choices define a game’s tone, usability, and identity.

They unpack what “artwork and design” really means in tabletop RPGs, including visual identity, graphic systems, physical production, and digital presentation. Along the way, they discuss how cover art sets expectations, how interior art supports immersion, why layout is a gameplay tool, and where style can sometimes get in the way of function.

The conversation also explores common pitfalls in TTRPG design, like cluttered pages, inconsistent visual language, poor readability, and misleading art direction. To wrap it all up, Seth & Jeff apply the CRITICAL Framework to score artwork and design based on visual identity, clarity, consistency, accessibility, and production quality.

Episode Hosts

Seth Glenn
Seth has always enjoyed great games and great story telling; growing up reading Narnia, Lord of the Rings, BattleTech, and Star Wars to name but a few. Little did he know that the worlds he and his friends created with Legos would foster his love for TTRPGs! God has used gaming throughout Seth's life to build relationships and share His love with others. Seth is supported by his loving wife and his two sons with whom he enjoys sharing his passion and creativity for gaming.
Jeff Evans
Jeff grew up playing board games, card games, and Nintendo with his parents. From a young age he developed a love for TCGs, starting with Pokémon, then Yugioh, to MTG. As a kid, Jeff spent hours dreaming up different universes, unaware that games existed that could bring them to life. After spending years playing MMO's, Jeff's mind was blown when Seth introduced him to TTRPGs, opening his eyes to endless possibilities. Now, as a full-time youth and teaching pastor, Jeff balances his passion for gaming with ministry. Teaching nerds like Him that Jesus loves them regardless of their hobbies. Jeff also enjoys gaming with his wife and two kids, who share his passion for exploring new worlds and embarking on adventures, both in games and in life.
