How to Enjoy the LTN Radio Playlists [Updated]

January 1st of 2026 marked the official relaunch of LTN Radio as a massive collection of hand curated Spotify playlists, eventually making their way to Apple Music as well. This article exists to share the story behind LTN Radio, highlight the playlists now available, guide you through using Spotify/Apple Music if you are new to the platforms, and answer any questions you may have.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LTN RADIO

LTN Radio began its life in 2018 under a very different name. Alongside his ministry partner Mo and a small group of generous donors, Radio Matt launched Back Row Radio as an extension of the Back Row Baptist Podcast.

From the earliest episodes of that show, the team reached out to independent Christian artists to feature their music during segment breaks. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into something much bigger when hundreds of incredible submissions poured in from talented artists who were not being heard elsewhere.

After a couple of years, it became clear that these songs deserved more than short appearances between podcast segments. Radio Matt and his collaborators began exploring the idea of a full radio station that could highlight independent Christian artists alongside the best Christian rock, rap, and pop music that rarely finds space on mainstream Christian radio. Radio has always been part of Radio Matt’s story. Both his father and grandfather owned radio stations, and growing up he learned nearly every role in the business. The radio bug never truly left him.

As the vision expanded, the Back Row Baptist Podcast evolved into the Back Row Morning Show, shifting from a once a week format to four days a week. Fridays became a space to feature shows from friends, with the final addition being Church Nerds hosted by Bubba and Anna Stalclup. What many listeners did not realize at the time was that Church Nerds was created as a joint ministry effort between Back Row Radio and Love Thy Nerd, a connection that would grow over time.

In October of 2020, during the online LTN Con, Back Row Radio was officially folded into Love Thy Nerd and rebranded as LTN Radio. Radio Matt and Mo continued hosting the morning show, eventually producing well over 500 episodes. The LTN Podcast Network became a core part of the station, with episodes premiering on LTN Radio before being released to podcast platforms. At the same time, the station’s music library continued to grow, allowing even more independent artists to be featured.

As the station gained listeners, the team was able to launch the LTN Radio app and establish traditions that became listener favorites. One of the most beloved was the annual Christmas channel, launched every November and December, featuring Christian rock, rap, pop, and indie Christmas music that almost never receives mainstream airplay.

More than seven years have passed since the original launch of the station and over four years since it became part of Love Thy Nerd. In that time, a lot has changed. The Back Row Morning Show came to an end in 2023. The Love Thy Nerd podcasts transitioned from audio only formats to video first shows on YouTube. Independent Christian artists began finding much greater visibility on Spotify than they ever had before. At the same time, several radio stations similar to LTN Radio launched using the same platform the station had relied on from the beginning.

Eventually, it became clear that LTN Radio had accomplished what it set out to do in its original form. Rather than trying to compete directly with Spotify, Radio Matt and the Love Thy Nerd team recognized it was time to use the platform in a bigger and more intentional way.

That decision led to the relaunch of LTN Radio as a collection of massive, hand curated Spotify playlists. Between April and December of 2025, Radio Matt has painstakingly created dozens of Christian music playlists, one song at a time, to cover a wide range of tastes, making the new iteration of LTN Radio the largest one yet.

A soft-launch of the new Spotify playlists began in November with the Christmas playlists launching first, in place of the annual LTN Radio Christmas Channel that had been a special project available the last several years. The Christmas playlists were a bigger success than expected, leading to great excitement around the official New Year’s Day launch.

The LTN Radio Spotify Playlists launched with approximately 100 playlists. Over the first 6 months, a couple groups of playlists were removed, while a few new playlists were added. Due to popular demand, the playlists were also added to Apple Music, in two batches a few months apart.

That brings us to where we are today. What is coming next? We can’t wait to find out.

THE NEW PLAYLISTS

We have nearly 70 active playlists as of September 2026, separated into several categories. You can find each of them linked on our radio page, on our Spotify profile, or our Apple Music profile.

This playlist most closely reflects the now ended LTN Radio live channel. It is a massive collection of the best Christian rock, rap, pop, and indie music, spanning from the 1990s to today.

In addition to the main radio mix, LTN Radio has built 15 additional massive radio mixes focused on specific genres, including alternative, contemporary, country and southern gospel, EDM, hard rock and heavy metal, lofi, rock, rap and hip hop, praise and worship, and more.

These playlists highlight the most popular Christian genres by featuring only the most recent 100 additions from their corresponding radio mixes. They are the perfect way to stay up to date with the latest releases.

Unlike the genre mixes, these mood playlists are designed to help set the tone you are looking for. Whether you want music to chill to, laugh with, dance to, get motivated in the gym, cry through, or fall in love by, LTN Radio has you covered.

These playlists focus on what is trending in the Christian music space. They feature two weekly updated top lists, along with a running collection of every number one song on the Christian charts since tracking began.

As many members of the LTN staff are millennials, there is a natural soft spot for late 1990s and early 2000s Christian music. That shared nostalgia inspired the creation of these decade focused, memory filled radio mixes.

These playlists were carefully curated for younger listeners, ranging from youth group students to the youngest music fans.

Finally, these playlists highlight the favorite music of the LTN staff. It is a chance to listen to the songs they love and the music they listen to every day.

FAQ

How often are these playlists updated?

Updates will happen weekly, on the weekends. Even while these playlists were private, the team updated them each weekend to establish a consistent rhythm before launch. Most updates will occur on Saturdays, though occasional updates may land on Friday night or Sunday.

(Specifically, the general order of things is that all of the Spotify playlists are updated on Saturday afternoons, the Fresh or “New” playlists on Apple Music are updated Saturday evenings, and the rest of the Apple Music playlists update on Sundays.)

Some playlists, especially those focused on past decades, may change very little or not at all. Not every genre or mood will receive new additions every week, since there may not always be new releases that fit or meet the quality standard.

That said, new music is listened to and evaluated regularly, and worthy tracks are added to the playlists where they belong.

You can always check when a playlist was most recently updated by reading its description, where the latest update date is clearly noted.

Was AI used to build these playlists?

Simply and clearly: No.

AI was not used to build these playlists, they are not used to curate them, and there are no plans to implement AI in their upkeep.

With the number of playlists being released, some have assumed that the sheer volume must mean automation was involved, raising concerns about quality.

In reality, this rollout has been planned since April of 2025, with playlist building beginning over the summer. Every song included was added by hand after being listened to and carefully evaluated.

The only use of AI in this process was in the creation of playlist cover images.

What's the difference between the "New" Genre Playlists and the standard ones?

Most of our genre-based playlists have a “New” playlist and a “Mega Mix” playlist.

The “New” playlists feature only the most recent 100 additions to the playlists. The “Mega Mix” playlists are the ever-growing collections of tracks from those playlists, with thousands of tracks.

Will these playlists be built on Amazon Music, YouTube Music or another service?

We started only on Spotify and have since added them all to Apple Music. However, at this time, we have no plans to expand beyond these two services. Our current set up includes the top two services and covers over 2/3rds of listeners.

Do I need a Paid Subscription to listen?

Spotify: No, a Spotify Premium subscription is not required to listen to these playlists. However, the experience is more limited on a free account. Free users can listen in shuffle mode only, which closely mirrors a traditional radio experience. There will also be occasional ads and limits on how many songs can be skipped. These restrictions apply to all Spotify listening on free accounts.

Spotify Premium users have more flexibility, including the ability to listen in any order, play specific songs at any time, and enjoy an ad free experience.

Which option you choose is entirely up to you. Love Thy Nerd does not receive any financial benefit from Spotify regardless of the type of account you use.

Apple Music: Yes, as Apple Music does not offer a free tier.

What if there is a song I don't like in a playlist?

Spotify: Not every song will connect with every listener, but Spotify makes it easy to tailor the experience to your taste. If a track is not for you, you can ensure it does not play again on that playlist.

Simply find the song and click the three dots to the right of the track. Select the option labeled “Hide in this playlist.” The song will be grayed out and will no longer play for you unless you choose to unhide it later.

Keep in mind that hiding a song only applies to the specific playlist you are viewing. If that track appears on another LTN Radio playlist, it will need to be hidden there as well.

Apple Music: Unfortunately, there is no way to hide a song in a playlist on Apple Music, as of the time of this writing.

Why is there a song on a playlist that is grayed out and won't play?

There can be several reasons a track appears grayed out, but the most common is that the song is temporarily or permanently unavailable in your region due to licensing issues, artist requests, or copyright changes.

In most cases, those tracks are left on the playlists in the hope that they will be reinstated. If a significant amount of time passes with no change, the track will likely be removed.

What if a song is obviously on the wrong playlist, a song is inappropriate or I find a duplicate?

Because these playlists are built by hand, with tracks often added to multiple playlists, occasional mistakes are inevitable. A song may end up in the wrong place, appear as a duplicate, or slip into our playlists when it does not belong.

If you spot any of these issues, please reach out to Radio Matt at radio@lovethynerd.com or tag @radiomattltn in the #music-chat channel on the LTN Discord. Your help keeps the playlists accurate and enjoyable for everyone.

How are new songs chosen to be added to these playlists?

Radio Matt is in charge of finding new music to evaluate, with a small team of occasional volunteers that submit their finds.

Radio Matt finds new releases from several lists online to ensure the most comprehensive list of weekly candidates (including sources like NewReleaseToday and Jesus Freak Hideout). However, we do not simply copy their playlists. Before a song is added to our playlists, it is given a listen to ensure it’s of decent quality.

Several new releases do not earn a spot in our playlists. While these decisions are currently subjective to Radio Matt, growing up in the radio industry, he has a very wide-spanning musical palette.

Can I suggest a song addition?

You are absolutely welcome to request additions to any of the playlists. While final decisions remain with the LTN Radio team, we know there is great music out there that may have been missed. The team will do its best to review and evaluate requests on a weekly basis.

Requests can be submitted in the #music-requests channel on the LTN Discord or by emailing Radio Matt at radio@lovethynerd.com.

I'm an indie Christian artist with music on Spotify. Can I request placement on your playlists?

Absolutely. One of the best parts of this project is the opportunity to spotlight excellent Christian music that often goes underheard. Artists are welcome to submit Spotify links for consideration, and submissions will be evaluated as quickly as possible. Single tracks will typically be reviewed faster than full albums or complete discographies.

Submissions can be sent by emailing Radio Matt at radio@lovethynerd.com.

Again, the preferred submission is a Spotify link to the song or album. Please do not send Apple Music links, music files, or links to songs on other services.

Can I request a new playlist?

We are always open to hearing about potential playlist blind spots. However, with nearly 60+ playlists already available, the team will be very selective about adding new ones.

Requests can be submitted in the #music-chat channel on the LTN Discord (tag @radiomattltn) or by emailing Radio Matt at radio@lovethynerd.com.

So, is the LTN Radio App dead now?

Yes, LTN Radio’s internet radio stream ended on Dec. 31, 2025.

This project has been, and will continue to be, a labor of love created for the community. Its goal is to showcase the depth and diversity of Christian music, especially artists who live outside the mainstream. We hope you enjoy exploring these playlists.
