Isaiah 7-10

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz

7 In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. ²When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

³And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. ⁴And say to him, ‘Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. ⁵Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, ⁶“Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” ⁷thus says the Lord God:

“‘It shall not stand,
    and it shall not come to pass.
⁸For the head of Syria is Damascus,
    and the head of Damascus is Rezin.
And within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.
⁹And the head of Ephraim is Samaria,
    and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah.
If you are not firm in faith,
    you will not be firm at all.’”

The Sign of Immanuel

¹⁰Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: ¹¹“Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” ¹²But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” ¹³And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? ¹⁴Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. ¹⁵He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. ¹⁶For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. ¹⁷The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!”

¹⁸In that day the Lord will whistle for the fly that is at the end of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. ¹⁹And they will all come and settle in the steep ravines, and in the clefts of the rocks, and on all the thornbushes, and on all the pastures.

²⁰In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired beyond the River—with the king of Assyria—the head and the hair of the feet, and it will sweep away the beard also.

²¹In that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep, ²²and because of the abundance of milk that they give, he will eat curds, for everyone who is left in the land will eat curds and honey.

²³In that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels of silver, will become briers and thorns. ²⁴With bow and arrows a man will come there, for all the land will be briers and thorns. ²⁵And as for all the hills that used to be hoed with a hoe, you will not come there for fear of briers and thorns, but they will become a place where cattle are let loose and where sheep tread.

The Coming Assyrian Invasion

8 Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large tablet and write on it in common characters, ‘Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz.’ ²And I will get reliable witnesses, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah, to attest for me.”

³And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz; ⁴for before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

⁵The Lord spoke to me again: ⁶“Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, and rejoice over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, ⁷therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them the waters of the River, mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks, ⁸and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, reaching even to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.”

⁹Be broken, you peoples, and be shattered;
    give ear, all you far countries;
strap on your armor and be shattered;
    strap on your armor and be shattered.
¹⁰Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
    speak a word, but it will not stand,
    for God is with us.

Fear God, Wait for the Lord

¹¹For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: ¹²“Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. ¹³But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. ¹⁴And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ¹⁵And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”

¹⁶Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples. ¹⁷I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. ¹⁸Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. ¹⁹And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? ²⁰To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. ²¹They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. ²²And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.

For to Us a Child Is Born

9 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

²The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
³You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with joy at the harvest,
    as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
⁴For the yoke of his burden,
    and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.
⁵For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
    and every garment rolled in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.
⁶For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
⁷Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Judgment on Arrogance and Oppression

⁸The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,
    and it will fall on Israel;
⁹and all the people will know,
    Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
    who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:
¹⁰“The bricks have fallen,
    but we will build with dressed stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
    but we will put cedars in their place.”
¹¹But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him,
    and stirs up his enemies.
¹²The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west
    devour Israel with open mouth.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

¹³The people did not turn to him who struck them,
    nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.
¹⁴So the Lord cut off from Israel head and tail,
    palm branch and reed in one day—
¹⁵the elder and honored man is the head,
    and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;
¹⁶for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,
    and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.
¹⁷Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men,
    and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows;
for everyone is godless and an evildoer,
    and every mouth speaks folly.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

¹⁸For wickedness burns like a fire;
    it consumes briers and thorns;
it kindles the thickets of the forest,
    and they roll upward in a column of smoke.
¹⁹Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    the land is scorched,
and the people are like fuel for the fire;
    no one spares another.
²⁰They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry,
    and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied;
each devours the flesh of his own arm,
²¹Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh;
    together they are against Judah.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

10 Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees,
    and the writers who keep writing oppression,
²to turn aside the needy from justice
    and to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be their spoil,
    and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
³What will you do on the day of punishment,
    in the ruin that will come from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
    and where will you leave your wealth?
⁴Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners
    or fall among the slain.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria

⁵Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger;
    the staff in their hands is my fury!
⁶Against a godless nation I send him,
    and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take spoil and seize plunder,
    and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
⁷But he does not so intend,
    and his heart does not so think;
but it is in his heart to destroy,
    and to cut off nations not a few;
⁸for he says:
“Are not my commanders all kings?
⁹Is not Calno like Carchemish?
    Is not Hamath like Arpad?
    Is not Samaria like Damascus?
¹⁰As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols,
    whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
¹¹shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols
    as I have done to Samaria and her images?”

¹²When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. ¹³For he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
    and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
    and plunder their treasures;
    like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
¹⁴My hand has found like a nest
    the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
    so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
    or opened the mouth or chirped.”

¹⁵Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it,
    or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
    or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
¹⁶Therefore the Lord God of hosts
    will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors,
and under his glory a burning will be kindled,
    like the burning of fire.
¹⁷The light of Israel will become a fire,
    and his Holy One a flame,
and it will burn and devour
    his thorns and briers in one day.
¹⁸The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land
    the Lord will destroy, both soul and body,
    and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
¹⁹The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few
    that a child can write them down.

The Remnant of Israel Will Return

²⁰In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. ²¹A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. ²²For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. ²³For the Lord God of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.

²⁴Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. ²⁵For in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. ²⁶And the Lord of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. ²⁷And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”

²⁸He has come to Aiath;
he has passed through Migron;
    at Michmash he stores his baggage;
²⁹they have crossed over the pass;
    at Geba they lodge for the night;
Ramah trembles;
    Gibeah of Saul has fled.
³⁰Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim!
    Give attention, O Laishah!
    O poor Anathoth!
³¹Madmenah is in flight;
    the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.
³²This very day he will halt at Nob;
    he will shake his fist
    at the mount of the daughter of Zion,
    the hill of Jerusalem.

³³Behold, the Lord God of hosts
    will lop the boughs with terrifying power;
the great in height will be hewn down,
    and the lofty will be brought low.
³⁴He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe,
    and Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One.

Psalm 22

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

22 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
²O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

³Yet you are holy,
    enthroned on the praises of Israel.
⁴In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
⁵To you they cried and were rescued;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

⁶But I am a worm and not a man,
    scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
⁷All who see me mock me;
    they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
⁸“He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
    let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

⁹Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
    you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
¹⁰On you was I cast from my birth,
    and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
¹¹Be not far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and there is none to help.

¹²Many bulls encompass me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
¹³they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

¹⁴I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
    it is melted within my breast;
¹⁵my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

¹⁶For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet—
¹⁷I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
¹⁸they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.

¹⁹But you, O Lord, do not be far off!
    O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
²⁰Deliver my soul from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dog!
²¹    Save me from the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!

²²I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
²³You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
²⁴For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he cried to him.

²⁵From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
²⁶The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever!

²⁷All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
²⁸For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

²⁹All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
³⁰Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
³¹they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.

Matthew 26

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, ²“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

³Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ⁴and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. ⁵But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

⁶Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, ⁷a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. ⁸And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? ⁹For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” ¹⁰But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. ¹¹For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. ¹²In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. ¹³Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

¹⁴Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. ¹⁶And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

The Passover with the Disciples

¹⁷Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” ¹⁸He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” ¹⁹And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

²⁰When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. ²¹And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” ²²And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” ²³He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. ²⁴The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” ²⁵Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

²⁶Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” ²⁷And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, ²⁸for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. ²⁹I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

³⁰And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. ³¹Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ ³²But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” ³³Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” ³⁴Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” ³⁵Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

³⁶Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” ³⁹And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” ⁴⁰And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? ⁴¹Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ⁴²Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” ⁴³And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. ⁴⁵Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

⁴⁷While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. ⁴⁸Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” ⁴⁹And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. ⁵⁰Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. ⁵¹And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. ⁵²Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. ⁵³Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? ⁵⁴But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” ⁵⁵At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. ⁵⁶But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.

In Psalm 22, David’s lament foreshadows Christ’s agony on the cross. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” is not only a cry of despair but a doorway to deeper faith. God does not abandon His own; He transforms suffering into salvation.

In Matthew 26, we witness Jesus’ sorrow in Gethsemane, His resolve before betrayal, and His quiet dignity before unjust judgment. Jesus knows the cross awaits, yet He walks toward it, because love compels Him. His suffering was not accidental—it was redemptive. Jesus bore the cross not just to save us but to walk with us through every valley. We do not journey alone. His crown came through thorns, and so may ours—but glory awaits.

Your Bad Movie Take Does Not Make You My Enemy

Online Discourse, Having Strong Opinions, and Remembering to Love Your Neighbor

Tell me if this sounds familiar. It’s 11:00 PM (or 2:00 am if you’re like me and just HAD to defeat that boss).

You finished a movie, a show, or a 60-hour RPG, and your brain is buzzing. You’re riding that high of pure, unadulterated joy. You log onto social media to find forums and pages so you can read the theories, celebrate the high notes, and laugh at the memes.

Instead, you step straight into the famous Community meme: Donald Glover walking into a living room with two boxes of pizza, only to find the apartment in flames, a room full of screaming people, and absolute, chaotic anarchy.

You then make a fatal mistake. You ask a tame question about a plot point, and the internet responds by dropping a tactical nuke on your screen as your notifications go off with angry comments.

Welcome to modern fandom, where every movie trailer is a border dispute, every game remake is a war, and the comment section operates on the logic of Anakin Skywalker: “If you’re not with me, then you’re my enemy.”

Flaming people on the internet isn’t new, but the rules of engagement have changed.

Back in the Wild West days of early message boards, online arguments felt like turn-based combat from an old Final Fantasy game. You traded blows over lore, but the goal was simple: prove you were the bigger, more devout fan. It could get annoying, but it was contained to that single message board. You could always close the tab.

Today, the goal isn’t to out-fan your opponent. It’s to execute a purge of anyone who fails the ever-changing purity test of what makes a “true fan.”

The second someone strays from the consensus, we pull out the branding iron: Chud. Shill. Lib. Grifter. Larp. These aren’t just insults. They are intellectual exit ramps.

The moment I label you a “shill,” I don’t just dismiss your take on a plot twist. I strip away your humanity. You are no longer an image-bearer, someone crafted in the image of God and endowed with inherent dignity, no matter how wild their opinions might be.

All humans, regardless of their faith, should be viewed as image-bearers worthy of love. Instead, I’ve reduced you to a barbarian at the gate, and I have full moral permission to tee off on you with the worst assumptions I can imagine.

Take the recent release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The online discourse surrounding this film wasn’t a conversation about art. It was a loyalty test.

If you love the movie, Camp A brands you a “brain-dead studio shill who will consume any and all Hollywood slop.” If you criticize it, Camp B brands you a “miserable, bad-faith troll” driven by bigotry.

Here’s my personal take: I have zero desire to see Nolan’s The Odyssey. When I found out the translation he relied on was framed by a translator who openly altered Homer’s core text to fit modern sensibilities, I checked out. If you want to rewrite classical literature to fit your personal worldview/agenda, that’s fine, but don’t call it Homer. Do what O Brother, Where Art Thou? did and make a brilliant original work that is inspired by the myth.

But here’s the radical part: I can hold that boundary without hating the person who falls in love with the movie.

Why is this so hard now? Because we aren’t just having our normal arguments that come and go anymore.

We are fighting a machine engineered to farm our rage.

The old internet ran on a golden rule: Don’t Feed the Trolls. If someone posted an absurd take, you ignored them, they were starved of attention, and the thread died. If it was a REALLY absurd take, they would get roasted until they gave up or left. It could get brutal, but hey, nobody forced you to stay.

Today’s algorithms don’t just feed the trolls, they bulk them up, give them a megaphone and broadcast them directly to your screen. Platforms run on engagement metrics, and anger gets the best numbers. Pause for three seconds on a reel of someone destroying a game you love, and your feed becomes a toxic wasteland of rage-bait creators earning a living off your elevated heart rate. The worst part is, unlike the forums of the past, algorithms follow you across every site you visit.

The natural human response to this dumpster fire is retreat. We pull back. We delete apps. We hide our passions. We stop talking about the art we love because we don’t want to be associated with “those people.”

This is where the real tragedy lies, especially for thoughtful people trying to navigate culture. When the room gets loud and vicious, the reasonable people quietly leave. We retreat into silent cliques, surrendering the public square to the most unhinged, outrage-addicted voices.

But total cultural isolation isn’t the answer. Stories shape culture, and culture shapes us.

Loving art requires taking it seriously. Passion is a good thing. Passion is what brought the fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 back from the dead after many believed, myself included, that Disney would never allow a legal means to play the classic game.

Passion saved the Sonic movie from that terrifying original CGI design that would have sunk the franchise. Now it is heading towards its fourth movie, and it stands as the gold standard of what happens when a studio actually listens to its audience. The key is discerning the difference between a real human who wants to debate and an algorithmically funded troll fishing for outrage material.

The person who walked out of The Odyssey declaring it a masterpiece isn’t my ideological enemy. They’re a human being who has a different stance than I do. I don’t need to call them a “Hollywood mouthpiece” to validate my own literary taste. And even with the ultimate irony that the very translator Nolan relied on gave the film one of its most scathing reviews, I don’t need to wield that news as a blunt weapon against the people who loved it.

This is the kind of interaction we need to reclaim. When someone disagrees with us online, we don’t have to retreat into silence, nor do we have to drop a nuke on their comment. We can ask genuine questions. We can debate translation choices, plot holes, or character arcs with fire and passion, without stripping the other person of their humanity.

So let’s stop taking the rage-bait. Let’s starve the machines and creators that profit off our bitterness. Let’s reclaim the lost art of having fiercely strong opinions while remembering that the person across the digital screen is still our neighbor, even when they clearly have the wrong opinion compared to yours.

    and it is sound wisdom to fear your name:
“Hear of the rod and of him who appointed it!
¹⁰    Can I forget any longer the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked,
    and the scant measure that is accursed?
¹¹Shall I acquit the man with wicked scales
    and with a bag of deceitful weights?
¹²Your rich men are full of violence;
    your inhabitants speak lies,
    and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
¹³Therefore I strike you with a grievous blow,
    making you desolate because of your sins.
¹⁴You shall eat, but not be satisfied,
    and there shall be hunger within you;
you shall put away, but not preserve,
    and what you preserve I will give to the sword.
¹⁵You shall sow, but not reap;
    you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil;
    you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine.
¹⁶For you have kept the statutes of Omri,
    and all the works of the house of Ahab;
    and you have walked in their counsels,
that I may make you a desolation, and your inhabitants a hissing;
    so you shall bear the scorn of my people.”

Wait for the God of Salvation

7 Woe is me! For I have become
    as when the summer fruit has been gathered,
    as when the grapes have been gleaned:
there is no cluster to eat,
    no first-ripe fig that my soul desires.
²The godly has perished from the earth,
    and there is no one upright among mankind;
they all lie in wait for blood,
    and each hunts the other with a net.
³Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well;
    the prince and the judge ask for a bribe,
and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul;
    thus they weave it together.
⁴The best of them is like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
The day of your watchmen, of your punishment, has come;
    now their confusion is at hand.
⁵Put no trust in a neighbor;
    have no confidence in a friend;
guard the doors of your mouth
    from her who lies in your arms;
⁶for the son treats the father with contempt,
    the daughter rises up against her mother,
the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
    a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.
⁷But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.

⁸Rejoice not over me, O my enemy;
    when I fall, I shall rise;
when I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be a light to me.
⁹I will bear the indignation of the Lord
    because I have sinned against him,
until he pleads my cause
    and executes judgment for me.
He will bring me out to the light;
    I shall look upon his vindication.
¹⁰Then my enemy will see,
    and shame will cover her who said to me,
    “Where is the Lord your God?”
My eyes will look upon her;
    now she will be trampled down
    like the mire of the streets.

¹¹A day for the building of your walls!
    In that day the boundary shall be far extended.
¹²In that day they will come to you,
    from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
and from Egypt to the River,
    from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.
¹³But the earth will be desolate
    because of its inhabitants,
    for the fruit of their deeds.

¹⁴Shepherd your people with your staff,
    the flock of your inheritance,
who dwell alone in a forest
    in the midst of a garden land;
let them graze in Bashan and Gilead
    as in the days of old.
¹⁵As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt,
    I will show them marvelous things.
¹⁶The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might;
they shall lay their hands on their mouths;
    their ears shall be deaf;
¹⁷they shall lick the dust like a serpent,
    like the crawling things of the earth;
they shall come trembling out of their strongholds;
    they shall turn in dread to the Lord our God,
    and they shall be in fear of you.

God’s Steadfast Love and Compassion

¹⁸Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity
    and passing over transgression
    for the remnant of his inheritance?
He does not retain his anger forever,
    because he delights in steadfast love.
¹⁹He will again have compassion on us;
    he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
You will cast all our sins
    into the depths of the sea.
²⁰You will show faithfulness to Jacob
    and steadfast love to Abraham,
as you have sworn to our fathers
    from the days of old.

Matthew 25

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. ²Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. ³For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, ⁴but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. ⁵As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. ⁶But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ ⁷Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. ⁸And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ ⁹But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ ¹⁰And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. ¹¹Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ ¹²But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ ¹³Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents

¹⁴“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. ¹⁵To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. The Final Judgment

³¹“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. ³²Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. ³³And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. ³⁴Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ³⁵For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, ³⁶I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ ³⁷Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? ³⁸And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? ³⁹And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ ⁴⁰And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

⁴¹“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. ⁴²For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, ⁴³I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ ⁴⁴Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ ⁴⁵Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ ⁴⁶And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Summary of Micah 5–7

Micah 5 begins with a prophecy of the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem, describing a Ruler from ancient times who will shepherd His flock and bring peace, even in the face of Assyrian threat. God promises to purge idols and destroy the sources of false security. Chapter 6 contains a courtroom scene where God pleads His case against Israel, reminding them of His past faithfulness. He rejects empty rituals and calls for a deeper righteousness: “to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” Chapter 7 opens with lament over widespread corruption but transitions into a confident hope. Despite sin and societal collapse, Micah proclaims that God will forgive, restore, and shepherd His people again, ending with a powerful affirmation of God’s mercy: “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression?”

Summary of Matthew 25

Matthew 25 includes three parables illustrating how Jesus’ followers should live in anticipation of His return. In the Parable of the Ten Virgins, five are wise and prepared, while five are foolish and miss the bridegroom’s arrival. The Parable of the Talents teaches stewardship: each servant is given responsibility, and faithfulness is rewarded, while negligence is condemned. Finally, the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats presents the final judgment, where people are separated based on how they treated “the least of these.” Acts of mercy and compassion become the evidence of genuine faith and love for Christ.

DEVOTIONAL

Prepared and Merciful

The world does not wait well. It rushes, demands, and often forgets what it’s even waiting for. But Scripture calls believers to a different kind of waiting—a watchful, purposeful expectancy rooted in trust. Micah prophesies the coming of a Shepherd from Bethlehem, a ruler who will lead in strength and peace. He urges Israel to live not with hollow rituals, but with hearts aligned with God’s justice and mercy.

This theme finds a perfect echo in Matthew 25. Jesus tells us what waiting looks like: it means being prepared like the wise virgins, faithful like the good stewards, and merciful like the sheep. Waiting isn’t passive. It is active, generous, and intentional.

God is not impressed by religious motions if they are detached from justice, mercy, and humility. He desires lives that reflect His heart. Micah’s well-known verse (6:8) serves as a compass: do what is right, love deeply, and walk humbly. These are not lofty ideals—they are daily choices made by those who know the Shepherd.

The final judgment Jesus describes is not based on how much we knew, but how we lived it out. Did we care for the hungry, the stranger, the imprisoned? Did we see Jesus in the faces of the vulnerable?

God is coming again in the person of Christ. And when He does, may He find us ready—not just with lamps full, but with hearts full of compassion, hands busy with love, and lives shaped by faithfulness.

Choose one act of mercy today that reflects the love of Christ—visit someone lonely, donate to a cause, serve a meal, or offer encouragement. Let it be done not out of obligation, but as a joyful expression of readiness and love.

Shepherd of our souls, we thank You for coming humbly and for promising to come again in glory. Teach us to wait with wisdom, to serve with faithfulness, and to love with mercy. Forgive our complacency and awaken our hearts to live for what matters most. May we be a people who act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. And when You return, may You find us faithful. Micah 1-4

1 The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

The Coming Destruction

²Hear, you peoples, all of you;
    pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it,
and let the Lord God be a witness against you,
    the Lord from his holy temple.
³For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place,
    and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.
⁴And the mountains will melt under him,
    and the valleys will split open,
like wax before the fire,
    like waters poured down a steep place.
⁵All this is for the transgression of Jacob
    and for the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the transgression of Jacob?
    Is it not Samaria?
And what is the high place of Judah?
    Is it not Jerusalem?

and I will pour down her stones into the valley

Woe to the Oppressors

2 Woe to those who devise wickedness
    and work evil on their beds!
When the morning dawns, they perform it,
    because it is in the power of their hand.
²They covet fields and seize them,
    and houses, and take them away;
they oppress a man and his house,
    a man and his inheritance.
³Therefore thus says the Lord:
behold, against this family I am devising disaster,
    from which you cannot remove your necks,
and you shall not walk haughtily,
    for it will be a time of disaster.
⁴In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you
    and moan bitterly,
and say, “We are utterly ruined;
    he changes the portion of my people;
how he removes it from me!
    To an apostate he allots our fields.”
⁵Therefore you will have none to cast the line by lot
    in the assembly of the Lord.

⁶“Do not preach”—thus they preach—
    “one should not preach of such things;
    disgrace will not overtake us.”
⁷Should this be said, O house of Jacob?
    Has the Lord grown impatient?
    Are these his deeds?
Do not my words do good
    to him who walks uprightly?
⁸But lately my people have risen up as an enemy;
you strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly
    with no thought of war.
⁹The women of my people you drive out
    from their delightful houses;
from their young children you take away
    my splendor forever.
¹⁰Arise and go,
    for this is no place to rest,
because of uncleanness that destroys
    with a grievous destruction.
¹¹If a man should go about and utter wind and lies,
    saying, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,”
    he would be the preacher for this people!
¹²I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob;
    I will gather the remnant of Israel;
I will set them together
    like sheep in a fold,
like a flock in its pasture,
    a noisy multitude of men.
¹³He who opens the breach goes up before them;
    they break through and pass the gate,
    going out by it.
Their king passes on before them,
    the Lord at their head.

Rulers and Prophets Denounced

3 And I said:
Hear, you heads of Jacob
    and rulers of the house of Israel!
Is it not for you to know justice?—
²    you who hate the good and love the evil,
who tear the skin from off my people
    and their flesh from off their bones,
³who eat the flesh of my people,
    and flay their skin from off them,
and break their bones in pieces
    and chop them up like meat in a pot,
    like flesh in a cauldron.

⁴Then they will cry to the Lord,
but he will not answer them;
he will hide his face from them at that time,
because they have made their deeds evil.

⁵Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets
    who lead my people astray,
who cry “Peace”
    when they have something to eat,
but declare war against him
    who puts nothing into their mouths.
⁶Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,
    and darkness to you, without divination.
The sun shall go down on the prophets,
    and the day shall be black over them;
⁷the seers shall be disgraced,
    and the diviners put to shame;
they shall all cover their lips,
    for there is no answer from God.
⁸But as for me, I am filled with power,
    with the Spirit of the Lord,
    and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression
    and to Israel his sin.

⁹Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob
    and rulers of the house of Israel,
who detest justice
    and make crooked all that is straight,
¹⁰who build Zion with blood
    and Jerusalem with iniquity.
¹¹Its heads give judgment for a bribe;
    its priests teach for a price;
    its prophets practice divination for money;
yet they lean on the Lord and say,
    “Is not the Lord in the midst of us?
    No disaster shall come upon us.”
¹²Therefore because of you
    Zion shall be plowed as a field;
Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
    and the mountain of the house a wooded height.

The Mountain of the Lord

4 It shall come to pass in the latter days
    that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and it shall be lifted up above the hills;
and peoples shall flow to it,
²    and many nations shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
³He shall judge between many peoples,
    and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war anymore;
⁴but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree,
    and no one shall make them afraid,
    for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.
⁵For all the peoples walk
    each in the name of its god,
but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God
    forever and ever.

The Lord Shall Rescue Zion

⁶In that day, declares the Lord,
    I will assemble the lame
and gather those who have been driven away
    and those whom I have afflicted;
⁷and the lame I will make the remnant,
    and those who were cast off, a strong nation;
and the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion
    from this time forth and forevermore.

⁸And you, O tower of the flock,
    hill of the daughter of Zion,
to you shall it come,
    the former dominion shall come,
    kingship for the daughter of Jerusalem.

⁹Now why do you cry aloud?
    Is there no king in you?
Has your counselor perished,
    that pain seized you like a woman in labor?
¹⁰Writhe and groan, O daughter of Zion,
    like a woman in labor,
for now you shall go out from the city
    and dwell in the open country;
    you shall go to Babylon.
There you shall be rescued;
    there the Lord will redeem you
    from the hand of your enemies.

    are assembled against you,
saying, “Let her be defiled,

Psalm 10

Why Do You Hide Yourself?

10 Why, O Lord, do you stand far away?
Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

²In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor;
    let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised.
³For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul,
    and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord.
⁴In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him;
    all his thoughts are, “There is no God.”
⁵His ways prosper at all times;
    your judgments are on high, out of his sight;
    as for all his foes, he puffs at them.
⁶He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved;
    throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.”
⁷His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression;
    under his tongue are mischief and iniquity.
⁸He sits in ambush in the villages;
    in hiding places he murders the innocent.
His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless;
⁹    he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket;
he lurks that he may seize the poor;
    he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.
¹⁰The helpless are crushed, sink down,
    and fall by his might.
¹¹He says in his heart, “God has forgotten,
    he has hidden his face, he will never see it.”

¹²Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;
    forget not the afflicted.
¹³Why does the wicked renounce God
    and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?
¹⁴But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,
    that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless commits himself;
    you have been the helper of the fatherless.
¹⁵Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;
    call his wickedness to account till you find none.

¹⁶The Lord is king forever and ever;
    the nations perish from his land.
¹⁷O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
    you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
¹⁸to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
    so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

Matthew 24

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. ²But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

³As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” ⁴And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. ⁵For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. ⁶And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. ⁷For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. ⁸All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

⁹“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. ¹⁰And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. ¹¹And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. ¹²And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. ¹³But the one who endures to the end will be saved. ¹⁴And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

¹⁵“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), ¹⁶then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ¹⁷Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, ¹⁸and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. ¹⁹And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! ²⁰Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. ²¹For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. ²²And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. ²³Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. ²⁴For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵See, I have told you beforehand. ²⁶So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. ²⁷For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ²⁸Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

²⁹“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ³⁰Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. ³¹And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

³²“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ³³So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. ³⁴Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ³⁵Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

³⁶“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. ³⁷For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ³⁸For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, ³⁹and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ⁴⁰Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. ⁴¹Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. ⁴²Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. ⁴³But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. ⁴⁴Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

⁴⁵“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? ⁴⁶Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. ⁴⁷Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. ⁴⁸But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ ⁴⁹and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, ⁵⁰the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know ⁵¹and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Summary of Micah 1–4

Micah, a prophet during the same era as Isaiah, delivers God’s judgment against Samaria (capital of Israel) and Jerusalem (Judah). Chapter 1 opens with vivid imagery of God descending to judge for idolatry and corruption. In chapter 2, Micah condemns those who devise evil, especially the powerful who exploit the vulnerable. False prophets are also denounced for misleading the people with comforting lies. Yet chapter 2 ends with a promise of restoration—a remnant will be gathered by a Shepherd-King. Chapter 3 highlights the failures of Israel’s leaders: rulers who devour the people, prophets who preach for profit, and priests who distort justice. But chapter 4 offers a breathtaking vision of peace: in the last days, nations will stream to the mountain of the Lord, where justice reigns and war ceases. Despite their present suffering, God promises that He will redeem and rule in righteousness.

Summary of Psalm 10

Psalm 10 is a heartfelt lament asking why God seems distant when the wicked flourish. The psalmist describes the arrogance, deceit, and cruelty of the wicked, who believe they’ll escape judgment. But the psalm turns in faith: God does see. He is a defender of the helpless and hears the cry of the afflicted. The psalm ends with a confident appeal for God to arise and act on behalf of the oppressed, affirming that He is King forever and will bring justice.

Summary of Matthew 24

In Matthew 24, Jesus delivers the Olivet Discourse—His teaching on the end times. He predicts the destruction of the temple, signs of the end (wars, famines, persecution, false prophets), and increasing lawlessness. He warns that the love of many will grow cold, but those who endure will be saved. Jesus speaks of “the abomination of desolation” and urges believers to flee when they see it. He describes a time of great tribulation, followed by cosmic signs and His glorious return. Jesus emphasizes readiness, using the image of a fig tree and the suddenness of the flood in Noah’s time to teach that His coming will be unexpected. He ends with a parable about faithful and wicked servants, warning that judgment will come swiftly and decisively.

DEVOTIONAL

When God Comes Down

Micah’s opening words are striking: “The Lord is coming down from His dwelling place.” It’s a powerful image—God stepping into the brokenness of our world to confront injustice, comfort the afflicted, and restore what’s been lost. This same theme echoes through Psalm 10 and Matthew 24. God is not passive. He sees. He moves. He comes.

It can be hard to hold these truths together. On one hand, we cry out like the psalmist: “Why, O Lord, do You stand far off?” On the other hand, we believe Jesus’ words: He is coming again. The in-between can feel long, and injustice seems to reign unchecked. The wicked prosper, the poor suffer, and the faithful wonder if God still intervenes.

Micah reminds us that God will come—not just in wrath, but in mercy. He sees the exploitation, hears the lies, and will judge with righteousness. But He also gathers, shepherds, and restores. He is both Lion and Lamb, Judge and Redeemer.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 24 are not meant to incite fear, but faithfulness. The world will shake. Tribulation will come. But those who endure, who keep watch, who trust in the Shepherd-King, will find their place in His eternal kingdom.

So we live with watchful hope. We confront injustice, comfort the afflicted, and remain faithful—not because the world is safe, but because our God is coming. And when He comes, He will make all things right.

Isaiah 4-6

4 And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; take away our reproach.”

The Branch of the Lord Glorified

²In that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and honor of the survivors of Israel. ³And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem, ⁴when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning. ⁵Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be a canopy. ⁶There will be a booth for shade by day from the heat, and for a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain.

The Vineyard of the Lord Destroyed

5 Let me sing for my beloved
    my love song concerning his vineyard:

    and hewed out a wine vat in it;

Woe to the Wicked

⁸Woe to those who join house to house,
    who add field to field,
until there is no more room,
    and you are made to dwell alone
    in the midst of the land.
⁹The Lord of hosts has sworn in my hearing:
“Surely many houses shall be desolate,
    large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant.
¹⁰For ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bath,
    and a homer of seed shall yield but an ephah.”

¹¹Woe to those who rise early in the morning,
    that they may run after strong drink,
who tarry late into the evening
    as wine inflames them!
¹²They have lyre and harp,
    tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts,
but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord,
    or see the work of his hands.

¹³Therefore my people go into exile
    for lack of knowledge;
their honored men go hungry,
    and their multitude is parched with thirst.
¹⁴Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite
    and opened its mouth beyond measure,

²⁰Woe to those who call evil good
    and good evil,
who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter!
²¹Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
    and shrewd in their own sight!
²²Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine,
    and valiant men in mixing strong drink,
²³who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
    and deprive the innocent of his right!

²⁴Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so their root will be as rottenness,
    and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts,
    and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
²⁵Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them,
    and the mountains quaked;
and their corpses were as refuse
    in the midst of the streets.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

²⁶He will raise a signal for nations far away,
    and whistle for them from the ends of the earth;
and behold, quickly, speedily they come!
²⁷None is weary, none stumbles,
    none slumbers or sleeps,
not a waistband is loose,
    not a sandal strap broken;
²⁸their arrows are sharp,
    all their bows bent,
their horses’ hoofs seem like flint,
    and their wheels like the whirlwind.
²⁹Their roaring is like a lion,
    like young lions they roar;
they growl and seize their prey;
    they carry it off, and none can rescue.

Isaiah’s Vision of the Lord

6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. ²Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. ³And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”

⁴And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. ⁵And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

⁶Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. ⁷And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah’s Commission from the Lord

⁸And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” ⁹And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

“‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
¹⁰Make the heart of this people dull,
    and their ears heavy,
    and blind their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
    and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
    and turn and be healed.”
¹¹Then I said, “How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
    and the land is a desolate waste,
¹²and the Lord removes people far away,
    and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
¹³And though a tenth remain in it,
    it will be burned again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
    whose stump remains
    when it is felled.”
The holy seed is its stump.

Matthew 23

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ²“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, ³so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice. ⁴They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. ⁵They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, ⁶and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues ⁷and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. ⁸But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. ⁹And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. ¹⁰Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. ¹¹The greatest among you shall be your servant. ¹²Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹³“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. ¹⁵Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

¹⁶“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ ¹⁷You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? ¹⁸And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ ¹⁹You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? ²⁰So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. ²¹And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it. ²²And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.

²³“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ²⁴You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

²⁵“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. ²⁶You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

²⁷“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. ²⁸So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

²⁹“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ ³¹Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³²Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. ³³You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? ³⁴Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, ³⁵so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. ³⁶Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

³⁷“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! ³⁸See, your house is left to you desolate. ³⁹For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

SUMMARIES

Summary of Isaiah 4–6

Isaiah 4 presents a brief yet radiant picture of hope: after judgment, a remnant of Israel will be purified and restored. The “Branch of the Lord” (a Messianic term) will bring beauty and glory, and Jerusalem will be called holy. Isaiah 5 shifts tone with a parable of a vineyard—representing Israel—that fails to yield good fruit. God pronounces six “woes” upon the people for their greed, drunkenness, mockery of God, injustice, and pride. The chapter ends with a vision of judgment through foreign invasion. Isaiah 6 recounts the prophet’s personal call. In the temple, he sees the Lord “high and lifted up” with seraphim crying, “Holy, holy, holy.” Overwhelmed by his unworthiness, Isaiah is cleansed with a coal from the altar. Summary of Matthew 23

Matthew 23 records Jesus’ scathing rebuke of the scribes and Pharisees. He exposes their hypocrisy in a series of seven “woes,” condemning their love of status, burdensome legalism, and failure to practice justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Jesus compares them to whitewashed tombs—beautiful outside, but full of death within. He laments over Jerusalem’s rejection of prophets and expresses deep sorrow for their unwillingness to embrace truth. The chapter ends with His prophetic declaration: “Your house is left to you desolate,” setting the stage for judgment and longing for their return.

DEVOTIONAL

When God Says ‘Woe’

Few words in Scripture are as sobering as a “woe” spoken by God. In Isaiah and Matthew, we hear it repeatedly—against corruption, pride, spiritual pretense, and injustice. When God says “woe,” He is not merely angry; He is heartbroken. He desires holiness, not for His sake alone, but for ours.

Isaiah’s vision of God’s holiness shakes him to his core. In the presence of divine purity, Isaiah is undone—not because he is worse than others, but because he is honest about his sin. And yet, God doesn’t leave him there. A coal from the altar touches his lips, symbolizing purification, and he is sent out—not as a perfect man, but a willing one.

Contrast that with the Pharisees in Matthew 23. They had knowledge, influence, and religious acclaim, but lacked the heart of God. Their righteousness was external, their spirituality a performance. Jesus’ words to them are piercing, not because He hates them, but because He mourns their refusal to repent. They built tombs for prophets yet silenced prophecy in their day. They honored the law but neglected its essence—justice, mercy, and faithfulness.

God is still calling people today who will, like Isaiah, say, “Here I am. Send me.” He’s not looking for perfect resumes or impressive facades. He’s looking for hearts broken by His holiness and made whole by His mercy. Let His holiness humble you, and His mercy embolden you. The woes of Scripture are invitations—calls to repentance and transformation.

The Game Makers Review

The Game Makers from Bezier Games enables players to take on the task of manufacturing board games. Each player will work in their own factory, creating games to go on their individual 12-slot game shelves. Games will each provide unique scoring opportunities based on other games in a player’s collection, games in other collections and multipliers from the player’s marketing board.

Note: this review is based on the Kickstarter “Completionist” pledge.

Production Quality

It is hard to start with anything but the production quality when this game is encountered. Everything about this game is well planned out with a thought process that looks at gameplay and storage equally. The components look and feel great. The art is vibrant and appealing. It truly looks impressive on the table.

The storage solution features plastic, curved trays with compartments meant for the various components. Wooden meeples are combined with plastic towers and tiles called “tweenies” while structure tokens, scoring charts and machine tiles come from traditional cardboard punch-outs.

That same storage solution moves straight to the table during setup. The round board used throughout the game is made of a thick plastic and the storage trays lock to the sides near their corresponding wedges. Remove the lid, click in place, and the central game board and various supplies are ready to go.

Each individual player receives a dual-layer, tri-folded board that represents their factory. Bezier includes small shipping-container-shaped boxes in each player’s color. These boxes are large enough to fit the components needed to set up each player’s board – marketing track cubes, a set of tweenies, scoring charts and three die-cast forklifts.

Gameplay

Scoring and Winning

At the heart of this game, like so many others, players are simply trying to achieve the highest score. How a player gets there takes a good understanding of the various areas of the factory board and the makeup of the cards.

Game Makers plays a little fast and loose with the categories, as expected. Breaking up the entirety of the world’s board game catalog into four basic groups is an impossible task. That said, each game does fit the category that has been assigned in some way. Classifying The Game Makers itself as a Set Collection/Card Game might be over simplifying things, but I would imagine that is exactly where the game would fit within the structure.

The cards represent a who’s who of modern real-world board games. Players won’t find themselves making generic board games, they will find all their favorites mixed in. Those favorites are placed into four categories – Set Collection/Card, War/Fighting, Co-operative/Team and Engine Building/Strategy. Cards, referred to as Contracts when being produced, provide scoring based on various factors of where they are placed on the shelf or even points simply for being in the player’s collection.

For example, a player might play The Fox Experiment, an Engine Building Game in this instance. This game will award the player 1 victory point per game that requires dice to construct in each row of the player’s shelf, up to three total points (1 per shelf).

Other games may provide points for specific conditions per column or for contracts with a specific condition that are contiguously connected to similar contracts.

Each category of games provides a different way of scoring based on the player’s individual marketing strategy as well. Players can use dice rolls throughout the game to increase each marketing track, which will then apply a multiplier to the scoring opportunities there.

Engine Building games generate points for each column on the player’s shelf that has one. Set Collection awards points for every two such games on the shelf. Co-Op games give points for every other player that also has a Co-Op game as well as a bonus if the player has three such games on their own shelf. War Games give points based on having more than each other opponent. Finally, there is a final marketing multiplier based on Trees that award points for sets of trees the player has planted throughout the game.

As players climb the various marketing tracks, they achieve multipliers to each of these values for end game scoring. Making no progress on a marketing track will leave a player with a zero multiplier, awarding zero points no matter what they were able to accomplish on their shelves.

When the game completes, the player will total points for each individual card on a scoresheet, totaling each row of shelf in a column. They will then total their marketing tracks and record those. Finally, they will add the bonus points they might have achieved by completing their first structure. Adding all of these together, the player will learn their total score for the game.

Tie breakers have become one of the most unique and fun aspects of modern board games and The Game Makers doesn’t disappoint. Players can use an interactive web-based application to take a picture of their completed shelves from the game. The application will then return the current ranking of each game on BoardGameGeek.com. If there were a tie for high score, the highest rated game on BGG’s website wins!

How Do We Get There?

Now that players know what they are trying to do to win, examining how to get to that point is paramount. The mechanics of the game are not overly complicated and provide simultaneous play for the players.

The game uses terminology to refer to items used as components – cards, plastic, wood, tiles and dice. Players will need to decide whether to use resources as components to fulfill contracts or as upgrades to their factory. Dice can be used to increase marketing values. Wood can be placed into the Break Room to use as workers. Cards can be used as Contracts to create games. Tiles can be placed into the Assembly Line. Plastic can be used to build structures.

Players will acquire components by moving their assigned forklifts around the central Warehouse. As play progresses each round, the Steering Wheel will rotate and reveal three spaces that can be used to generate resources that round. Players will move their forklifts that are in the first revealed wedge to one of the next three wedges, increasing the size of the resource returned based on how far they had to move.

For instance, if a player moves their forklift forward three spaces to the wedge designated for cards, they would gain three cards. The next round, that wedge will only be two spaces away and would then reward only two cards. Each component has various sizes or strengths that will apply based on the distance the forklift had to travel to acquire it.

Once a component is acquired, the player then decides whether to place it throughout their factory or into the components area. Items in the components area can be held there indefinitely to be used to fulfill contracts as soon as the player has gathered all of the required components for the contract.

As each wedge is activated, players take their turns simultaneously, greatly increasing the pace of play and eliminating downtime. Components are acquired and placed and, when the wedge is empty of all forklifts, the steering wheel is then rotated forward and the next wedge is activated.

Players may use workers in various ways throughout game play, sending them out to structures or enhancement areas to assist with various tasks. Once the steering wheel has made a complete rotation, designated by the label “Return To The” on the wheel lining up with the label “Breakroom” on the warehouse wedge, workers will return to their respective break rooms to be used again in the future.

Breaking Down The Factory Boards

Understanding the gameplay is easier by looking over the various areas of each player’s factory board. Each section provides players with unique ways to interact with game play.

The Breakroom is where workers are placed in order to be used at any point during gameplay. Workers are classified by level, either 1, 2 or 3. Each level is represented by a larger meeple, with level one workers resembling a small factory worker, level two resembling a slightly larger worker that is wearing a tie and level three resembling the game’s mascot – a panda.

Workers can be used in various ways. One of those ways is the next area of the board, where players find ways for gaining resources and enhancing actions by placing workers. The “Gain 1” area of the board allows players to place workers here to gain a resource of their choice in various sizes. Each option requires two workers – a level 1 worker and a second worker that corresponds to the strength of the resource. A level 1 worker and a level 3 worker will gain the player a level 3 resource of their choice, for instance.

The “Enhancements” area increases dice rolls if workers are placed in their respective slots along the top. Placing a worker in the slots along the bottom will allow the player to draw an additional tile or card per worker when they take an action to draw either of those items.

Below the worker area is the factory’s “Assembly”. Players can place tiles into this area, effectively increasing the quality of goods they produce. Matching three icons in a row for a resource will create a discount for that resource when used to fulfill a contract. Having three card icons in a row will mean that a player would have to pay one less card than a contract is requiring. This discount can stack, making some requirements free should the player have an efficient enough assembly built up.

The Game Makers features a unique item here referred to as TWEENIEs. These little additions are explained thematically as Thermal Working Engine Extraction Node Interface Elements. Each player has an identical set of 12 TWEENIEs at their disposal to use as they fill out the assembly. Each time a tile is placed in the assembly that creates a small, diamond-shaped hole, a player may place one of their TWEENIEs in between the tiles (see what they did there?). Each one grants a specific, one-time-use that a player can benefit from.

The right side of the player board offers the Marketing tracker. Players can assign dice rolls to increase their marketing levels, maximizing scoring for the various tracks.

Components are used to fulfill contracts and create games. Those are gathered together in the component area until a player is ready to fulfill a contract. Players are not required to fulfill a contract simply because they have the components and can choose to wait until a later round, if they want.

Down the far side of the board are slots for individual trees. As responsible factory owners, players are encouraged to plant trees along the way as they achieve various feats. Trees provide some end game scoring based on the marketing track assigned to them.

With so many tracks to follow, it can be easy for a player to try and attack all of them at once. The trees, specifically, can be a difficult track to leverage. It is often best to find one or two tracks to focus on and maximize the value there. As for trees, it might be easier to take advantage of them when you are gaining them than it would be to try and focus on creating them in the first place.

Rounding out the factories are the slots for the contracts and structures. Contracts are drafted to start the game and throughout by taking the cards action. Cards can either become contracts to fulfill or components to be used for other contracts. These contracts drive scoring for the game overall.

At the beginning of the game, players choose a structure from each set of structures available – A, B or C. These structures, which often require a resource assigned to them in order to become active, provide end game scoring or benefits throughout the game.

Pulling It All Together

Overall, the mechanics of the game are pretty straightforward. Move your forklift, collect resources, use them to fulfill contracts or to make the factory more efficient all the while driving the overall victory points to their maximum potential. There are a lot of areas to maintain, but it’s all manageable and becomes easier the more you play.

The simultaneous nature of the play creates a surprisingly quick game based on the overall complexity. Players continue to make their way through their own factories while gathering resources and waiting for the steering wheel to move.

The game does create a lot of solitary play. There is very little player interaction and no significant way to impede another player. The focus remains entirely on what your strategy needs and how to move it forward. The game moves quickly and players will need to keep an eye out for when their opponents might be close to triggering the end of the game.

A lot of games with table presence fall short in the gameplay. Some games have great gameplay but just don’t look that great on the table. The Game Makers seems to figure out how to do both. It is a game that demands people at conventions to stop and ask what is being played, simply because it looks awesome. It’s also a game that begs players to ask “want to play again?” because it is over faster than anticipated.

The amazing work on production quality and functionality is what sets this apart. Table presence is always appreciated, but using the game’s storage system to also create that table presence is simply impressive. Setup time is very fast and the gameplay does not disappoint.

The price tends to drive some gamers away. I invite gamers to evaluate the amount of game for the price and give it a chance. It’s worth every penny. Alternatively, as mentioned before, there is very little player interaction which impacts some gamers when choosing their next item for their shelf. Beyond the price and interactivity lies a game that is a potential favorite.

Overall, The Game Makers feel like a unique entry into the hobby and one that many gamers would enjoy. The cooperation within the industry to ensure that the game would represent so many real-world games lends itself well to an industry that aims to be inviting and inclusive. While unique in its own right, The Game Makers leans heavily into familiar mechanics to drive home a winner.

The Wickedness of Judah

²Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth;
    for the Lord has spoken:
“Children have I reared and brought up,
    but they have rebelled against me.

The Unfaithful City

²¹How the faithful city
    has become a whore,

Righteousness lodged in her,

The Mountain of the Lord

2 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

²It shall come to pass in the latter days
    that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,
³    and many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
⁴He shall judge between the nations,
    and shall decide disputes for many peoples;

The Day of the Lord

⁶For you have rejected your people,

Judgment on Judah and Jerusalem

3 For behold, the Lord God of hosts
    is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah
support and supply,

    and the man of rank,

¹⁵What do you mean by crushing my people,

Because the daughters of Zion are haughty
    and walk with outstretched necks,
    glancing wantonly with their eyes,
mincing along as they go,
    tinkling with their feet,
¹⁷therefore the Lord will strike with a scab

Psalm 9

I Will Recount Your Wonderful Deeds

Matthew 22

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

22 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, ²“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, ³and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. ⁴Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ ⁵But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, ⁶while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. ⁷The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. ⁸Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. ⁹Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ ¹⁰And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

¹¹“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. ¹²And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. ¹³Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ ¹⁴For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

¹⁵Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. ¹⁶And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. ¹⁷Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” ¹⁸But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? ¹⁹Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. ²⁰And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” ²¹They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” ²²When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

²³The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, ²⁴saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ ²⁵Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. ²⁶So too the second and third, down to the seventh. ²⁷After them all, the woman died. ²⁸In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

²⁹But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. ³⁰For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ³¹And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ³²‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” ³³And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

³⁴But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. ³⁵And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ³⁶“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ³⁷And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ³⁸This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ⁴⁰On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

⁴¹Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ⁴²saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” ⁴³He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

⁴⁴“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

⁴⁵If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” ⁴⁶And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

SUMMARIES

Summary of Isaiah 1–3

The psalmist affirms that the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed and never forgets those who seek Him. It contrasts the transient nature of human power with the enduring justice of God. Summary of Matthew 22

DEVOTIONAL

Invited and Clothed in Righteousness

Jesus’ Parable of the Wedding Feast captures the heart of today’s readings: God’s generous invitation and our necessary response. Like the people of Isaiah’s time, many are invited to know God, to worship, and to live righteously. Yet the danger lies in offering lip service while our hearts remain unchanged. Isaiah rebukes Judah for its empty rituals—feasts and sacrifices that mean little when justice and humility are absent.

Psalm 9 reminds us that God sees through the facade. He upholds the cause of the humble, hears the cry of the afflicted, and brings down the prideful. The Lord is not deceived by religious appearances or noble titles—He looks for a heart turned toward Him, marked by righteousness and mercy.

In Matthew 22, the King invites all to the feast, even those once excluded. Yet entry is not on our terms. The man without wedding garments is cast out—not because he wasn’t invited, but because he didn’t come prepared. God calls us to accept His grace and to clothe ourselves in Christ’s righteousness. Grace isn’t an excuse for apathy; it’s the power for transformation.

We live in a world that often minimizes sin and overvalues appearance. But God’s justice is unwavering. He invites us to more than mere belief—He calls us to a life that reflects His holiness, one that embodies love, humility, and truth. Let us not take lightly the invitation or neglect the garment. For in Him, we find both the call and the covering.

In what ways might you be offering outward religious devotion without inward transformation?
How does knowing God’s justice and mercy affect the way you live and treat others?
Are there any “invitations” from God you’ve been ignoring, delaying, or rejecting?

Spend time today in prayerful reflection and confession. Ask God to show you any areas where you’ve been spiritually complacent or resistant to His leading. Then take one specific action to pursue righteousness—perhaps by seeking reconciliation, serving someone in need, or advocating for someone oppressed.

PRAYER

Righteous and Merciful Father, thank You for Your persistent invitation to know You and to walk in Your ways. Forgive us for the times we’ve appeared faithful while our hearts were far from You. Help us to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. Clothe us in the righteousness of Christ so that we may stand before You not in pretense, but in truth. May our lives reflect the glory of Your grace and the beauty of Your holiness. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Zechariah Reigns in Israel

⁸In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months. ⁹And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done. ¹³Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned one month in Samaria. ¹⁴Then Menahem the son of Gadi came up from Tirzah and came to Samaria, and he struck down Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and put him to death and reigned in his place. ¹⁵Now the rest of the deeds of Shallum, and the conspiracy that he made, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. ¹⁶At that time Menahem sacked Tiphsah and all who were in it and its territory from Tirzah on, because they did not open it to him. Therefore he sacked it, and he ripped open all the women in it who were pregnant.

Menahem Reigns in Israel

¹⁷In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem the son of Gadi began to reign over Israel, and he reigned ten years in Samaria. ¹⁸And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart all his days from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. ¹⁹Pul the king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that he might help him to confirm his hold on the royal power. ²⁰Menahem exacted the money from Israel, that is, from all the wealthy men, fifty shekels of silver from every man, to give to the king of Assyria. ²³In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned two years. ²⁴And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. ²⁵And Pekah the son of Remaliah, his captain, conspired against him with fifty men of the people of Gilead, and struck him down in Samaria, in the citadel of the king’s house with Argob and Arieh; he put him to death and reigned in his place. ²⁶Now the rest of the deeds of Pekahiah and all that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Pekah Reigns in Israel

²⁷In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twenty years. ²⁸And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin.

²⁹In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria. ³⁰Then Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah and struck him down and put him to death and reigned in his place, in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. ³¹Now the rest of the acts of Pekah and all that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Jotham Reigns in Judah

³²In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign. ³³He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok. ³⁴And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that his father Uzziah had done. ³⁵Nevertheless, the high places were not removed. The people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places. He built the upper gate of the house of the Lord. ³⁶Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ³⁷In those days the Lord began to send Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah. ³⁸Jotham slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father, and Ahaz his son reigned in his place.

Ahaz Reigns in Judah

16 In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of Jotham, king of Judah, began to reign. ²Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord his God, as his father David had done, ³but he walked in the way of the kings of Israel. He even burned his son as an offering, according to the despicable practices of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. ⁴And he sacrificed and made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.

⁵Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, came up to wage war on Jerusalem, and they besieged Ahaz but could not conquer him. ⁶At that time Rezin the king of Syria recovered Elath for Syria and drove the men of Judah from Elath, and the Edomites came to Elath, where they dwell to this day. ⁷So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.” ⁸Ahaz also took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasures of the king’s house and sent a present to the king of Assyria. ⁹And the king of Assyria listened to him. The king of Assyria marched up against Damascus and took it, carrying its people captive to Kir, and he killed Rezin.

¹⁰When King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, he saw the altar that was at Damascus. And King Ahaz sent to Uriah the priest a model of the altar, and its pattern, exact in all its details. ¹¹And Uriah the priest built the altar; in accordance with all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so Uriah the priest made it, before King Ahaz arrived from Damascus. ¹²And when the king came from Damascus, the king viewed the altar. Then the king drew near to the altar and went up on it ¹³and burned his burnt offering and his grain offering and poured his drink offering and threw the blood of his peace offerings on the altar. ¹⁴And the bronze altar that was before the Lord he removed from the front of the house, from the place between his altar and the house of the Lord, and put it on the north side of his altar. ¹⁵And King Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, saying, “On the great altar burn the morning burnt offering and the evening grain offering and the king’s burnt offering and his grain offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their grain offering and their drink offering. And throw on it all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of the sacrifice, but the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by.” ¹⁶Uriah the priest did all this, as King Ahaz commanded.

¹⁷And King Ahaz cut off the frames of the stands and removed the basin from them, and he took down the sea from off the bronze oxen that were under it and put it on a stone pedestal. ¹⁸And the covered way for the Sabbath that had been built inside the house and the outer entrance for the king he caused to go around the house of the Lord, because of the king of Assyria. ¹⁹Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ²⁰And Ahaz slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.

Matthew 21

The Triumphal Entry

21 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, ²saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. ³If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” ⁴This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

⁵“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

⁶The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. ⁷They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. ⁸Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. ⁹And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” ¹⁰And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” ¹¹And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

¹⁸In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. ¹⁹And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

²⁰When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” ²¹And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. ²²And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

²³And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” ²⁴Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵The baptism of John, from where did it come? ²⁸“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ ²⁹And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. ³⁰And he went to the other son and said the same.
